Netflix has told TechRadar that it is hoping to expand the brand in the UK, with the introduction of its app on more smart TV platforms and remote controls with a Netflix button.

Netflix launched in the UK in February and is available on a number of devices including the PS3, iPad and PCs.

Currently Netflix is also on Samsung smart TVs but it is hoping to be picked up by other television brands in the UK, as it sees the smart TV category as an emerging one for movie streaming.

Smart move

"Smart TV is a big thing for us but at the moment it is an emerging market. Over time we hope to be on more Smart TVs in the UK. The category will grow but it is very small right now," explained Joris Evers, director of corporate communications for Netflix.

When it comes to a Netflix button on a remote, this is something that is already on devices in the US. Brands like Sony, Panasonic, Sharp and Samsung agreed to put buttons on their remote controls in January 2011 and it is something Netflix wants to bring to the UK.

"We want to make it as easy as possible for people to access Netflix. What we have in America is that some manufacturers have put us on their remotes, so there are Netflix buttons which go straight to the service once they are pressed," explained Evers.

"We are speaking about this with manufacturers in the UK and hope to see it happen."

Netflix has confirmed to TechRadar that it is not looking to develop a way to watch its movies offline, preferring to put its resources into creating the best online service instead.

Netflix came to the UK in February as a streaming service only, leaving the DVD side of the business back in the US.

Currently the ability to take your movies offline and view them when not connected to the web is not there and it looks as if it is unlikely this functionality will ever be delivered by Netflix.

TV still king

"There are some user cases where streaming isn’t best used – like when you are on a plane with your device, but it is such a small proportion of the market it’s not really beneficial to pursue this," explained Adrian Cockroft, Netflix’s cloud architect, to TechRadar.

"We would much rather make sure that our main service is the best it can be."

Cockcroft revealed that while mobile devices are key to Netflix – on which offline functionality would be beneficial – most long form content was still watched through a television.

"The biggest way people consume Netflix is on the TV, so while it is nice to have a mobile version our users don’t typically watch that many hours on it typically.

"We first started bringing streaming to laptops and then we finally went to the Xbox and this is when it really exploded and the whole thing took off like a rocket.

"Because all of a sudden you are sitting on your couch in front of your TV and Netflix is an option and you don’t have to go searching for your laptop, and this is by far the most popular way to view the service."

Warner Brothers and 20th Century Fox have teamed-up to offer an old-fashioned solution to a new problem and also tackle the digital dominance of iTunes and Netflix.

Two of Hollywood’s biggest studios have partnered with physical storage giants San Disk and Western Digital to give viewers a way to continue watching when they’re without an internet connection.

The initiative, codenamed Project Phenix – yes that’s the correct spelling – will enable users to download movies and TV shows directly to a flash drive.

The idea is to allow users to transfer purchased content to different devices that may not be connected or allow viewing on devices when no connectivity is available.

1080p video streaming will also be available to watch over the cloud on a range of connected devices, while the drive will also do a better job of protecting the studios’ copyright.

Vision for the future

The project is the brainchild of the Secure Content Storage Association (SCSA), which aims to protect valuable files online and for the studios will assist their drive against illegal downloading and sharing.

"The vision for this new product is to store, play and back up in the cloud personal and professional content," said Mike Dunn, President, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

"The device renders content up to 10 times faster than over-the-top internet. We see Project Phenix as a key component of the emerging digital ecosystem."
